Vecloader expedites asbestos project saving college time and money
In July of 2011, on the St. Michael’s College campus in Colchester Vermont, a boiler erupted while it was being serviced in the Purtill Hall dormitory. Fortunately, the students were on break and no one was hurt, however there was a big mess to clean up. The dormitory was filled with soot, the chimney was severely damaged and bricks were scattered everywhere. As a result of the explosion, asbestos insulation surrounding the boiler was sent in to the attic space and intermingled with the blown-in mineral wool insulation.
In August, Dec-Tam performed the removal and disposal of the asbestos contaminated blown-in mineral wool insulation from the ceiling located throughout the attic area. Dec-Tam also performed the proper surface decontamination of the various non-porous stored building items within the attic.
The abatement was performed within a HEPA-filtered negative air pressure enclosure in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations. With the use of DecTam’s trailer mounted self-contained vacuum system also known as a Vecloader, the removal of the insulation and detailed fine cleaning activities were performed efficiently and expeditiously to meet the owner’s aggressive schedule. This is an example of how Dec-Tam’s fleet of specialized equipment can complete a project with less manpower and lower costs for the client.
Upon completion, the college’s industrial hygienist performed a visual inspection and clearance air monitoring. When the air sample results were accepted, the containment barriers were dismantled and the area was cleared for other trades to work. Purtill Hall students were back in their dorm by November 1st.
